Dramatic Rescue for Explorer on first Greenland traverse |
|
|
An expedition led by speaker Philip Beale to be the first to cross Liverpool Lan don the Greenland icecap has hit a setback. One of the expedition members has retired following a fall whilst descending a glacier. although not badly injured he selflessly decided not to continue in cas ehe held up the rest of the team. He was rescued by skidoo after a five hour operation otu of Scoresby Land.
The remaining three team members are continuing but are plagued by bad weather with temperatures of -20C Thety are also staying vigilant after spotting fresh polar bear tracks. The expedition has enough food and fuel but due to the delays caused by the evacuation of one of the team members they may not have enough time to complete the entire traverse. If this is the case, organisers Pioneer Expeditions have already decided to run another expedition to cross Liverpool Land next spring.
Philip Beale, co-director of Pioneer Expeditions, reported by satellite phone on Sunday night that although conditions were terrible they were all in good spirits and determined to push on to try and complete the traverse on foot.
For further information on th expedition look at www. pioneerexpeditions.com.
Pioneer Expeditions, based in Dorset, was co-founded by adventure enthisasts Phil Beale (who led the Borobudur Ship Expeidition in 2003/4) and Adrian Gray (who has worked as a tour leader in over 20 countries).
