The Phoenician Ship Expedition 2007-2008 |
|
|
Philip Beale one of our intrepid explorer speakers and the leader of Pioneer Expeditions* is planning is next great expedition: The Phoenician Ship Expedition 2008 will be the first circumnavigation of Ancient Africa.
Over two and a half thousand years ago, one of the greatest journeys in mankind’s history began on the Egyptian shores of the Red Sea. Phoenician mariners, in ships of their own construction, set sail in 600BC and achieved the first circumnavigation of ancient Africa, a voyage into unknown waters previously considered too dangerous to attempt. They returned to Egypt via the Mediterranean three years later.
For the first time since that ancient odyssey was completed, a full size reconstruction of a Phoenician trading vessel with a maximum of twenty crew members will retrace their route around Africa.
The expedition will depart from the eastern Mediterranean in the winter of 2007, sail through the Suez Canal, around the Horn of Africa and down the treacherous east coast. The voyage north on the Western side will be no less of an epic, culminating in their return via the Mediterranean through the Strait s of Gibraltar.
The circumnavigation will be followed by another voyage to bring the ship to the United Kingdom, in all 17,000 miles and 8months at sea.
For more information about the expedition contact Philip on infor@shipexpedition.com or visit www.shipexpedition.com.
*Also contact Philip if you fancy a holiday you can’t buy on the high street. Adventures in far flung and remote places – it’s your chance to become an intrepid explorer yourself! |
